Five Middle Grade Novels For Girls

girl reading.png

Middle-grade novels are more than just stories; they are gateways to new worlds, experiences, and perspectives. For young girls, these books can be especially impactful, offering role models, adventures, and relatable themes.

My own Novel, Nowonderland, isn't aimed specifically at girls. But here are five middle-grade novels that are not only great reads but also empowering for girls.

1. "Matilda" by Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl's Matilda is a timeless classic that tells the story of a brilliant young girl with a love for books and a thirst for knowledge. Despite being born into a family that doesn't appreciate her intelligence, Matilda remains determined and resourceful. Her journey is one of self-discovery and resilience as she learns to harness her unique powers to stand up against the cruel headmistress, Miss Trunchbull.

What makes Matilda a great read for girls is its portrayal of a strong, independent female protagonist who defies expectations and takes control of her own destiny. The novel encourages young readers to value their intellect, embrace their uniqueness, and never let anyone diminish their potential.

2. "Anne of Green Gables" by L.M. Montgomery

Anne of Green Gables introduces readers to Anne Shirley, an imaginative and spirited orphan who is mistakenly sent to live with siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert in the small town of Avonlea. Anne's vibrant personality and endless curiosity often lead her into trouble, but her infectious optimism and kind heart win over everyone she meets.

Anne is an inspiring character for girls because she embodies the power of imagination and the importance of staying true to oneself. Through Anne's adventures and misadventures, young readers learn about resilience, friendship, and the value of seeing the world through a lens of wonder and possibility.

3. "The War That Saved My Life" Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

Set during World War II, The War That Saved My Life follows the story of Ada, a young girl with a clubfoot who has been mistreated by her mother her entire life. When Ada and her younger brother Jamie are evacuated from London to the English countryside, Ada begins to experience life outside of the abusive environment she has known. Under the care of a reluctant guardian, Ada discovers her own strength and courage, learning to trust and love for the first time.

This novel is a powerful exploration of personal growth, resilience, and the healing power of love and kindness. For girls, Ada's story is an inspiring reminder that no matter the obstacles, they have the strength within them to overcome adversity and find their own path to happiness.

4. "Esperanza Rising" by Pam Muñoz Ryan

Esperanza Rising tells the story of Esperanza Ortega, a young girl who lives a privileged life on her family's ranch in Mexico. However, when tragedy strikes, Esperanza and her mother are forced to flee to the United States during the Great Depression. They must adjust to a new life as farmworkers in California, facing hardships and discrimination along the way.

Esperanza's journey from wealth to poverty is a story of resilience, adaptability, and the power of hope. This novel teaches girls about the importance of perseverance, the strength of family, and the ability to rise above difficult circumstances. It's a poignant reminder that true wealth comes from inner strength and the bonds we share with others.

5. "Ella Enchanted" by Gail Carson Levine

Ella Enchanted is a fresh take on the classic Cinderella story, with a twist. Ella of Frell is cursed with the "gift" of obedience, meaning she must follow any order given to her, no matter how dangerous or humiliating. Determined to break the curse and reclaim her freedom, Ella embarks on a quest filled with magical creatures, challenges, and self-discovery.

Ella's story is one of empowerment and the importance of agency. Unlike the traditional Cinderella, Ella is proactive in shaping her destiny, refusing to be a passive victim of her circumstances. This novel encourages young girls to be strong, assertive, and to fight for their autonomy, making it an empowering read for any young reader.

These books are not just entertaining but also empowering, making them perfect reads for girls navigating the challenges and wonders of growing up.
